Enphase’s current U.S./Canada RMA procedure asks for proof of purchase, model, serial, a detailed defect description and a shipping address. It directs owners to the installer of record or a service firm and gives solar professionals a support/claim route. An RMA is a manufacturer decision after troubleshooting; it is not something a bidder should promise from an app image.

Is the module, microinverter, branch, Gateway or grid actually at fault?

Which Enphase generation and replacement path fits the exact system?
Never write “replace an M-series/IQ6/IQ7 with IQ8” as a general rule. Generation, SKU, module electrical data, AC cable/connectors, branch limits, Gateway/Envoy/Combiner, firmware, grid profile, backup hardware and utility approval all matter. The current device documents—not a distributor search result—must support the proposed configuration.

Enphase currently publishes IQ7-platform M215 and M250 replacement products including M215240-IQ7-S22-US and M250240-IQ7-S22-US; the current data sheet also distinguishes -S22 MC4 and -S25 UTX versions and an Engage-to-Q cable adapter (M215/M250 IQ7-platform data sheet). Those facts show why the complete suffix, connector and cable matter. They do not establish availability, warranty approval, compatibility with another M-series model, or Teamsun support.
For IQ7/IQ8 mixing, the current North American IQ8 installation guide permits IQ8 additions to existing IQ7 systems on the same IQ Gateway only in specified grid-tied solar-only or named solar-plus-battery-without-backup configurations. It says IQ7 units cannot simply be added to an existing IQ8 site on the same Gateway, mixed systems lose certain IQ8-specific PCS/grid-forming capabilities, and same-Gateway additions to an existing IQ7 site with an IQ System Controller are not supported under that guide. That is an asymmetric, configuration-specific rule—not interchangeability.
The proposal should attach the exact current installation/data sheet, an Enphase compatibility or support decision where needed, the revised array/branch map, and a list of features that remain, change or disappear.
Should you replace one unit, repower a branch, or redesign the system?
Use a decision tree that compares supported remedies rather than treating age as a diagnosis.
- Is there an immediate hazard? Isolate through qualified emergency/safety procedures and stop normal operation as directed. Do not wait for a price comparison.
- Is generation present but monitoring wrong? Correct the supported network, Gateway, account, mapping, configuration or communications issue and prove timestamps/production before ordering roof hardware.
- Is the fault outside the microinverter? Repair the module, connector, branch, breaker, roof condition, grid/service or other confirmed cause within licensed scope.
- Is one microinverter confirmed failed? Request the exact Enphase warranty or supported replacement. Freeze roof access, module handling, connectors, serial swap and commissioning scope.
- Is the original exact path unavailable? Obtain Enphase-supported successor/mixed-generation documentation and test all module, cable, branch, Gateway, grid, backup and utility boundaries.
- Are several devices/platform assets obsolete or repeatedly failing? Compare an affected-branch repower with a whole-array repower. Show retained/removed devices, new production model, warranties and total installed scope.

- Is diagnosis or compatibility still unresolved? Defer nonessential work, or use the qualified provider/manufacturer’s safe shutdown direction. Do not install a speculative substitute.
“Upgrade” needs a measurable object: restored production, supported replacement availability, current monitoring, new module pairing, fewer obsolete branch components, or a separately justified storage architecture. It must also disclose what the owner gives up, including remaining legacy coverage, history, backup functions or program status.
What does Enphase warranty cover, and what labor can remain?
Warranty status is serial-, activation-date-, territory- and document-specific. Enphase’s current U.S./Puerto Rico/Canada limited warranty effective for covered SKUs activated on or after September 1, 2025 lists covered IQ microinverters for 25 years from activation, while Gateway/Combiner and other products have different terms. It also says to use the warranty that applies to the product and activation date (current Enphase microinverter limited warranty). An older installed unit may be governed by another schedule.
The same warranty states that covered-product remedies are subject to its terms and Enphase confirmation. It excludes labor for uninstalling/reinstalling a covered product and for removing, installing or troubleshooting the owner’s electrical systems. A repaired/replacement product receives the remainder of the original term or the stated short minimum after receipt, not automatically a new full term. Registration, connectivity, ownership transfer, claim timing, exclusions and return requirements also matter.

Enphase publishes a separate Labor Protection Program contract. It applies only to eligible enrolled covered property and manufacturer-approved replacement conditions, pays the installer under a schedule, and warns that actual expenses may exceed coverage. Never infer enrollment from the Enphase logo, and never subtract a reimbursement until the exact site, term, device and claim are confirmed.

The cheapest hardware line can produce the highest installed scope if roof access is difficult, multiple modules must move, a cable/branch fault remains, a new Gateway or adapter is required, or the utility treats the change as more than in-kind. Compare cash scope before financing and keep lost production separate; neither a forum amount nor a nationwide price page is a local quote.
How do monitoring, owner access and serial migration close out the job?
Physical output and digital closeout are separate acceptance gates. Enphase’s November 2025 self-service return/replacement technical brief describes solar-professional access, owner approval for site access, RMA requests, and a replacement workflow using the old and new microinverter serials. Do not assume a contractor can access the site or that a physical swap will automatically update the array.
Before work, export available history and record site ID, owner/admin contacts, current maintainer, array map and affected serial. After work, require:
- old serial retired/replaced and new serial added under the supported workflow;
- correct roof position and module-to-device mapping;
- Gateway online with current timestamps and expected device count;
- correct firmware and utility-approved grid profile;
- affected branch/device reporting and producing under suitable conditions;
- no unresolved relevant events after a defined observation interval;
- owner login, alerts, reports and data access demonstrated;
- updated equipment list, one-line/as-built, case/RMA and return tracking;
- removed-device disposition and warranty/workmanship contacts.
If the replacement is a mixed IQ7/IQ8 configuration, acceptance must also prove the promised solar, battery, PCS and backup functions rather than merely showing a green status tile.
Do Connecticut, Massachusetts or Rhode Island require permit or utility review?
The local authority, serving utility and program administrator decide whether an exact repair is in-kind, needs a permit/update, requires inspection, or changes an interconnection/program record. Do not accept “it is only one microinverter” as the written determination.

Connecticut DCP defines PV-1/PV-2 and unlimited electrical-license boundaries and reserves connections to existing panels, wiring, circuits or meters to licensed E-1/E-2 holders (Connecticut solar trade scope). Massachusetts DPU says interconnected generation requires an Interconnection Service Agreement and Authorization to Connect and maintains a current equipment-replacement workstream (Massachusetts interconnection hub). Rhode Island’s statute provides a utility review for replacement renewable resources; it is not blanket permission to substitute equipment in the field (R.I. Gen. Laws §39-26.3-4.1).
