CT ESS program

Get paid to own a battery in Connecticut.

Connecticut's Energy Storage Solutions program pays an upfront incentive of up to $7,500 plus annual performance payments — for residential and commercial batteries on Eversource or United Illuminating service.

How it pays

Two payments, one enrollment.

CT ESS pays you twice — once at enrollment, then annually for as long as your battery participates. Both are stackable with the federal ITC.

Upfront passive incentive

A one-time check from CT Green Bank when your battery is approved and enrolled. Capped per kWh of battery capacity, paid through your installer.

Annual performance payment

Eversource and United Illuminating pay you each year based on your battery’s availability during peak grid events. Paid by program-year cycle.

No discharge to your home

Dispatch events use grid-export only — your home is never left without power. Backup capability is fully preserved during outages.

Stacks with federal ITC

CT ESS payments do not reduce your federal ITC eligibility. The 30% federal credit applies to the full battery cost basis.

Who qualifies

Four conditions every project meets.

The CT ESS approved-product list is short and stable. Every battery Teamsun installs is on it.

CT residents on Eversource or UI

Both Connecticut investor-owned utility customers qualify. Municipal utility customers (Norwich Public Utilities, Wallingford, etc.) follow separate programs.

New or existing solar systems

You can enroll a brand-new Teamsun solar+battery install, or retrofit a battery onto solar that another company built. Both paths are equally accepted.

Approved Tier 1 batteries

FranklinWH, Tesla Powerwall, and Enphase IQ Battery are all approved CT ESS batteries. Approved-product list is maintained by CT Green Bank and refreshed periodically.

Standalone battery enrollments

You do not need solar to participate. CT homeowners can install a battery for backup and demand-response payments without ever putting a panel on the roof.

How Teamsun handles it

Filing every form for you.

The CT ESS application has multiple parties — CT Green Bank, Eversource or UI, plus the battery manufacturer. Teamsun coordinates all of them as part of the install fee.

CT Green Bank application

We file the upfront-incentive enrollment paperwork with CT Green Bank as part of the install. Your only job is to sign.

Utility dispatch enrollment

Eversource or UI registration for the demand-response side, including the battery telemetry connection that lets the utility see availability.

Approved product confirmation

We confirm your specific battery model is on the current CT ESS approved-product list before install — no surprises about eligibility.

Annual payment follow-up

When your annual performance check arrives, you can call our Bristol office if anything looks off. A person picks up.

What customers say

Trusted by homeowners
who value quality.

“Teamsun was the only crew that walked the roof, named the panel brand, and answered every question without checking with someone. Same lead tech came back a year later when I added a battery.”
Robert P. Homeowner · Glastonbury, CT
“Three of my neighbors had Teamsun, so I called them. The crew was on my street five days after I signed.”
David L. Homeowner · West Hartford, CT
“They knew the historic district secretary by first name. Saved us six weeks on permitting alone.”
The Hwang family Homeowners · Glastonbury, CT
“Same lead tech who installed it came back four years later to swap an inverter under warranty. No charge, no excuses.”

CT ESS FAQ

Questions Connecticut homeowners ask about CT ESS.

How much does CT ESS pay?

The upfront passive incentive is calculated per kWh of battery capacity, with caps per battery and per program year. The annual performance payment depends on dispatch events and battery availability. Specific dollar figures change every program year — we share the current rates on every Teamsun proposal so you see the math before you sign.

Who runs the program?

CT ESS is jointly administered by the Connecticut Green Bank, PURA (CT Public Utilities Regulatory Authority), Eversource Connecticut, and United Illuminating. Teamsun coordinates with all four on your behalf.

Will my battery still work during a blackout?

Yes. Dispatch events use grid-export only. The battery stays full and ready to back up your home during outages. CT ESS does not allow utilities to drain your battery to your home loads.

Can I add a battery to solar I already have?

Yes — see our battery retrofit service. Existing solar systems on Eversource or UI service qualify for CT ESS as long as the battery is on the approved-product list. We file the same enrollment paperwork as a new install.

Do I need solar to participate?

No. Standalone batteries (no solar) are eligible for CT ESS. The Inflation Reduction Act also makes standalone batteries eligible for the 30% federal ITC. Some homeowners install a battery first for backup and demand-response payments, then add solar later.

How long does the dispatch period last?

Most dispatch events run 1 – 3 hours during peak grid demand windows — typically afternoon-into-evening on the hottest summer days. Total dispatch hours per program year are capped, and you are paid based on availability.

How long does enrollment take?

Allow 4 – 8 weeks from contract signing to active enrollment. Site visit and design lock takes 1 – 2 weeks, install runs 1 – 2 days on-site, and CT Green Bank application processing takes 3 – 6 weeks.

What happens if I sell my house?

CT ESS enrollment transfers with the property — the new owner inherits the upfront-incentive credit and the dispatch enrollment. Annual performance payments accrue to whoever owns the home each year.

Can I exit the dispatch program if I want my battery to be private-use only?

Yes. You can opt out of dispatch at any time, but you forfeit the annual performance payment for that program year. The upfront passive incentive is not clawed back.

How does CT ESS interact with the federal ITC?

They stack. The 30% federal ITC applies to the full installed cost of the battery, before CT ESS reduces your effective net cost. CT ESS payments do not reduce your federal credit basis. Speak with your CPA about your specific tax situation.
