Compare SolarEdge inverter RMA, compatible successor, repower, and redesign paths using exact models, optimizers, records, approvals, and acceptance tests.

A SolarEdge inverter replacement should be chosen from the exact installed system—not from the logo, the old inverter’s kW number, or a generic “battery-ready” promise. First prove the complete inverter model, part number, serial, activation date and fault. Then inventory every optimizer model and string, retrieve the approved one-line and utility record, and confirm the current manufacturer-supported replacement path. Only then can you compare an approved warranty replacement, compatible successor, partial repower, Home Hub redesign, third-party redesign, or safe shutdown.
This article is an evidence and scope guide, not a remote diagnosis. Do not open an inverter, measure energized conductors, climb a roof, defeat rapid shutdown, or follow forum instructions for a do-it-yourself swap. Solar PV circuits can remain hazardous in daylight, and commissioning or testing can require qualified electrical and manufacturer access. Direct answer: preserve the failure evidence, open the manufacturer/service case, freeze the installed optimizer and string design, and require each bidder to show exactly what stays, leaves and changes. A warranty RMA can still create labor, shipping, rewiring, access, monitoring, permit and downtime scope. A current Home Hub can be a valid redesign in a supported configuration, but it is not a universal drop-in successor.
Capture the failure record before authorizing a replacement
An alert, red LED, blank app or production drop does not by itself prove the power-conversion unit failed. Grid conditions, AC protection, DC faults, optimizer/string conditions, communications, firmware, metering or monitoring access can change what the owner sees. SolarEdge’s current status-verification instructions allow an owner to view production and communication through mySolarEdge and provide an advanced view when an installer requests it. They do not authorize opening equipment.
Start an evidence packet before anyone resets, unregisters, replaces or disposes of a component:

SolarEdge’s on-site troubleshooting checklist asks installers to gather the error, behavior, recent events and system information before contacting support. That is a good evidence structure, but its electrical checks are for qualified service personnel. The homeowner’s job is to preserve safe, visible information and records.
Stop ordinary intake and treat smoke, fire, arcing, burning odor, shock, water intrusion or visibly damaged energized equipment as a safety problem. The OSHA solar electrical-hazards page identifies shock, electrocution, burns and arc flash among PV hazards. Keep people away; call 911 for fire or immediate danger and follow emergency or utility direction. An offline app never justifies touching conductors.
Build an exact inverter, optimizer and interconnection inventory
The inverter is only one component of a SolarEdge string. Power optimizers on the roof manage module-level operating points and communicate through the DC circuit. A successor must work with the actual optimizer models, module electrical characteristics, string lengths, voltage/current limits, grid setting, rapid-shutdown design, metering and communications—not an assumed standard SolarEdge array.

Do not fill missing optimizer rows by counting monitoring tiles alone. A replacement history can leave more than one optimizer model on a roof, and a site layout can be incomplete or stale. SolarEdge’s July 2025 residential optimizer inter-compatibility technical note has separate S-series, R-series and P-series RMA tables. It says new installations should not mix S- and P-series optimizers in the same string and requires module power, short-circuit current and cold-temperature open-circuit voltage to be checked for a new optimizer. Those are model-level rules, not evidence that any new inverter accepts every legacy roof.
Use the approved one-line as the starting record, then reconcile it to the site. If the permit says one inverter or optimizer family but the labels, portal or roof audit say another, stop until the as-built condition is resolved. The same applies when an array addition changed Wdc, strings or AC rating without a revised utility record.
Require an optimizer-to-inverter compatibility matrix
Every replacement proposal should return one matrix. “SolarEdge compatible” is not an answer. The bidder should cite a current North American document, SolarEdge Designer output or manufacturer case for the complete combination and identify any condition the evidence does not settle.

There are two different compatibility questions. RMA compatibility asks whether a service optimizer can replace a failed installed optimizer under SolarEdge’s current tables. System redesign compatibility asks whether the complete retained roof and strings can operate with the proposed inverter and approved design. Passing one does not automatically pass the other.
SolarEdge’s current North American Home Hub data sheet names model families including SE3800H-US, SE5700H-US, SE6000H-US, SE7600H-US, SE10000H-US and SE11400H-US, with specific applicable part-number families (Home Hub data sheet). A newer made-in-USA single-SKU line uses a different part-number/configuration process: the installer locks the selected model and power class during commissioning, and SolarEdge says that selection must match AHJ and utility-approved plans (single-SKU guidelines). This is why a distributor SKU or “same 7.6 kW” description is insufficient.
Compare repair, replacement, repower and redesign paths
The correct path is the smallest supported scope that solves the proven problem and meets the owner’s future requirements. It is not automatically the newest or cheapest line item.

SolarEdge’s U.S. Re-Energize program terms describe a specific installer/reseller program for eligible existing Home Wave, StorEdge, EV Charging or A-series inverters and named Home Hub replacement part-number families. The terms include eligibility, monitoring and return conditions. That program is not evidence that a property qualifies, a bidder participates, the replacement is free, or the retained optimizer/string design passes. Request written, current eligibility and price separately.
A Home Hub is described by SolarEdge as battery- and backup-ready only when paired with the required supported components; SolarEdge’s product page says backup uses SolarEdge Home Batteries and the SolarEdge Home Backup Interface and remains subject to local regulation (Home Hub overview). “Ready” does not mean a battery, isolation hardware, load design, meter/CT work or approval is included. For a third-party redesign, state what happens to every SolarEdge optimizer. Do not assume proprietary optimizers become passive devices for a different inverter. The bidder must either cite the other manufacturer’s exact supported interface or price removal/replacement and redesign the array’s rapid shutdown, DC, monitoring and warranty scope.
Freeze a retained, removed and added schedule
An invoice that says “replace inverter” does not control the project. Attach a revision-controlled one-line and this three-column schedule to the contract:

SolarEdge publishes a Monitoring Platform component-replacement note for replacing an inverter, optimizer or other component in the site record. Make that administrative task contractual. Otherwise the new inverter can produce while the digital layout, serial history or alerts still point to the removed equipment.
The schedule should also say who owns the old inverter. An RMA or upgrade program may require return; the owner may need photos, serial, shipping or chain-of-custody evidence. No contractor should discard, recycle or retain the unit without the contract and manufacturer process defining the disposition.
Separate equipment warranty from the service job
SolarEdge’s owner page states a standard 12-year inverter warranty and model-dependent extension availability, but the serial, applicable limited warranty and extension record control (SolarEdge warranty guidance). Use the serial-number warranty check and attach the result; do not infer the remaining term from the installation year alone.
SolarEdge’s January 2026 warranty reimbursement guidelines describe installer compensation only for approved RMA work that satisfies listed conditions. They require advance RMA issuance and say the reimbursement policy does not compensate for lost production. A manufacturer reimbursement to an eligible installer is not necessarily the homeowner’s complete labor price or a promise that any bidder qualifies.

This avoids the most common surprise in homeowner discussions: “the inverter is covered” answers only the part question. It does not answer diagnostics, two truck rolls, changed physical layout, permitting, commissioning, shipping, monitoring administration or the time the system remains offline.
Make monitoring and account handoff part of completion
SolarEdge says the installer is normally the portal administrator who creates the site, invites users, sets access and configures alerts; SolarEdge maintains the platform but does not monitor a homeowner’s system (monitoring-account guidance). Define who actually watches alerts after replacement rather than treating app access as a monitoring service.
If the original installer closed or no longer services the property, use SolarEdge’s current site-transfer and new-user route. Assignment to a new installation company, transfer to a new owner and addition of a user are separate actions. Portal administration also does not prove electrical licensing, SolarEdge training, warranty claim eligibility or permission to alter a financed/leased system.
The closeout must record:
- old and new inverter model, part and serial numbers;
- installer SolarEdge case/RMA and component-replacement record;
- final optimizer count, pairing and physical layout map;
- final grid profile, firmware, power/export settings and meter/CT configuration;
- site owner, portal administrator, maintainer and owner access level;
- alert recipients and whether active monitoring is contracted;
- retained historical data and the first timestamp from the replacement unit;
- secure account-transfer completion without sharing the owner’s password;
- warranty registration, start/end evidence and service escalation path.
Do not accept “green light” as the only digital handoff. The owner should see the new component, current timestamp and plausible site-level production, while the contractor should preserve the qualified commissioning records and equipment map.
Route Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island separately
An in-kind repair may be processed differently from a changed AC rating, model, listing, export control, equipment count, battery addition or full repower. Do not let a salesperson state “no utility paperwork” without the serving utility and AHJ confirming how they classify the exact change.

Massachusetts DPU guidance says a distributed-generation owner needs the utility’s written interconnection approval and later Authorization to Connect. Its 2026 materials show equipment replacement is an active policy topic, while a published 2024 discussion deck distinguishes true in-kind, near-in-kind and system-replacement concepts but labels them discussion material subject to change. Use the current tariff and utility response, not the old slide as permission.
For all three states, freeze these milestones: replacement classification, permit submission, utility/program update, municipal inspection, required witness or commissioning test, meter action, and written authorization to return to operation. Preserve the original PTO and new closeout together.
Require acceptance tests and a production baseline
Commissioning is not complete when the inverter powers on. SolarEdge uses SetApp for supported current inverter commissioning and pairing; exact menus and access depend on the product. Require a qualified contractor to record the following without turning the article into a homeowner test procedure:

Create a baseline after return to service: date, available irradiance/weather, inverter energy, utility meter observation, optimizer count and first full-day data. That record helps distinguish a successful replacement from later shade, weather, communications or array issues. It is not a production guarantee.
If an optimizer remains missing, export control is untested, the portal shows the removed serial, or the grid profile does not match the approval, leave the item open with an owner and deadline. Do not sign unconditional completion around a verbal promise to “fix the app later.”
Normalize cost scope and use the stop, pause or proceed gate
There is no audited Teamsun SolarEdge replacement price, labor range or completed-project dataset available for this article. Do not use a forum number or national equipment listing as a New England quote. Compare exact scopes with blank inputs:

Proceed when the failure route, RMA or new-equipment status, exact compatibility matrix, retained–removed–added schedule, approval route, complete price, monitoring handoff, acceptance tests and service owner are documented.
Pause when the replacement is plausible but optimizer models, string map, portal administration, physical fit, manufacturer case, utility classification, roof condition, export settings or warranty labor remain unknown. Make those items preconstruction conditions.
Stop when a proposal asks the owner to open equipment, calls every same-kW inverter a drop-in, promises all SolarEdge optimizers are compatible, treats “Home Hub” as automatic battery backup, hides removal of roof electronics, relies on a forum successor, energizes before required approval, or leaves no party responsible for commissioning and future service.

Frequently asked questions about SolarEdge inverter replacement
Can I replace a SolarEdge inverter with the same kW model?
Possibly, but equal kW is only one field. Match the complete part/model, 208/240 V configuration, optimizer/string design, DC/AC limits, rapid shutdown, meter/export control, physical connections, firmware, utility record and commissioning process. A current unit with the same headline rating can still require revised plans or wiring.
Does a SolarEdge warranty mean replacement is free?
No universal conclusion follows. The applicable product warranty and serial status determine covered equipment. Diagnosis, visits, removal, installation, shipping, conduit, optimizer work, permitting, monitoring, downtime and other labor may be separate. An approved RMA and installer reimbursement are different from a complete owner invoice.
Can a homeowner replace or commission a SolarEdge inverter?
This guide does not support DIY electrical work. Solar equipment can present hazardous AC and DC conditions, and replacement can require qualified electrical work, manufacturer tools/access, permits, utility approval and documented commissioning. Owners can safely collect visible labels, screenshots and records.
Will a warranty replacement preserve my monitoring history?
It can be handled through the site/component-replacement process, but require it in the contract. Record the old and new serials, site administrator, layout, historical-data treatment, new first timestamp and alert settings. Do not assume a successful electrical swap automatically updates the digital record.
Can I keep my existing SolarEdge optimizers?
Only if the exact optimizer models, modules, strings and proposed inverter pass current SolarEdge design and inter-compatibility rules. P-, R- and S-series labels are not a single compatibility class. Missing optimizer records are a pause condition, not permission to guess.
Should I upgrade to a SolarEdge Home Hub inverter while replacing a failed inverter?
Consider it only as a complete supported redesign. Compare its exact part/model, retained optimizer compatibility, meter/CT and communications scope, physical and electrical work, approval changes, warranty and future battery/backup architecture. Do not pay for “battery-ready” without defining what future equipment and work remain.
Can I replace SolarEdge with another inverter brand?
Potentially, but it is usually an architecture redesign rather than a central box swap. The proposal must state whether existing SolarEdge optimizers are removed, what new module-level electronics and rapid-shutdown system apply, how strings are redesigned, which monitoring history/functions change and who owns the new cross-system warranties.
Will an inverter replacement need a permit or utility update?
It depends on the state, AHJ, utility, original approval and exact change. Like-for-like, near-in-kind, changed rating/listing, export controls, repower and storage additions may be routed differently. Obtain written, project-specific direction before construction or re-energization.
What happens if the original SolarEdge installer is out of business?
Collect proof of system ownership, the site ID, inverter serial, original contract/one-line/PTO and warranty records. Use SolarEdge’s site-transfer route to assign monitoring administration where appropriate, then verify the new contractor’s electrical, manufacturer, RMA and commissioning ability separately.
How long will the system be offline?
No universal schedule is supportable. Diagnosis, case/RMA approval, parts, contractor capacity, physical changes, permits, utility review, inspections and corrective work all affect downtime. Ask for milestone dates, dependencies, owner notices and a rule for escalation rather than a guaranteed generic number.
Does a replacement inverter reset every system warranty?
No. Ask what warranty applies to the replacement part and when it starts, then keep it separate from retained module/optimizer warranties, the original workmanship promise, new service workmanship and roof coverage. Alteration may also affect terms, so attach the applicable documents.
What should I receive at closeout?
Receive the as-built one-line, retained/removed/added equipment schedule, old/new serials, RMA and shipping disposition, permit/inspection/utility records, commissioning and acceptance tests, optimizer map/count, settings/firmware record, monitoring access, warranty documents, final invoice and named service contacts.
