The City’s Solar Ordinance Documents page links Ordinance 8-19-07. In the ordinance, minor accessory systems include roof-mounted and building-integrated systems, solar canopies, and certain ground-mounted systems designed to produce no more than 125% of on-site consumption. It says minor accessory systems are allowed by right in all zones, roof-mounted systems are exempt from building-height regulations, and roof-mounted or building-integrated equipment is exempt from setbacks so long as it does not extend beyond the host building.
The same ordinance says minor accessory systems require building and electrical permits. It also distinguishes larger or ground-mounted systems, which can trigger different site, dimensional, development-review, landscaping, stormwater, glare, noise, and decommissioning considerations. Do not let a bidder apply a rooftop conclusion to a backyard array without checking the site and current code.
Because the City-hosted ordinance contains broad provisions that refer to “all” solar energy systems, ask Cranston Zoning or Building Inspection which supporting studies apply to the actual minor rooftop application. For example, the ordinance discusses noise and stormwater requirements. The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 under the current IRS guidance.
