Solar Installers in Connecticut: A 2026 Buyer Guide

The right Connecticut solar installer is not the company with the loudest “local” claim or the lowest net price. It is the company that can show a complete credential chain, model your current utility tariff, document a buildable design, identify who will do the work, and accept responsibility through utility approval and service. Compare at least three site-specific offers on the same assumptions before signing.

A 2026 proposal that subtracts a 30% homeowner tax credit or omits the Netting tariff’s Solar Energy Adjustment is not using current assumptions.

How should you compare solar installers in Connecticut?
Use a two-stage decision: a pass/fail gate followed by a 100-point score. A company that cannot pass the credential, contract, or utility-modeling gate should not win because it offers better-looking savings.
Stage 1: the pass/fail gate
Require each installer to provide these items in writing:
- the exact legal name and Connecticut registration number of the company contracting with you;
- the exact legal name of the company that will install the array;
- the electrical contractor of record and applicable license numbers;
- the entity responsible for municipal permits, RRES, interconnection, inspection corrections, meter work, and approval to operate;
- a gross cash price before incentives or financing;
- a financing disclosure showing financed principal, payment schedule, term, rate, fees, and total of payments when applicable;
- a year-one production estimate with the design and loss assumptions behind it;
- the proposed RRES tariff and all 2026 tariff inputs; and
- the workmanship, roof-penetration, equipment, and service terms.
Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection recommends obtaining at least three quotes and verifying a contractor’s active Home Improvement Contractor registration. Its current consumer guidance also says the written contract should identify the work, materials, dates, expense, payment schedule, permit responsibility, and cancellation right (Connecticut DCP contract guidance).

Do not award points for labels such as “top,” “premium,” “approved,” or “local” without evidence. PURA says it does not approve or keep a list of active Connecticut solar companies. PURA regulates installer participation in utility interconnection, but it does not oversee solar sales, financing, maintenance, or warranty companies (PURA solar FAQs).
What should a Connecticut solar quote include?
A useful quote lets you reconstruct the price and the savings model. It should not reduce a complex project to a monthly payment.
Begin with the gross cash price and DC system size:
Gross cash cost per watt = gross cash project price ÷ total DC system watts
Use that calculation only as a screening metric. A lower cost per watt can hide weaker equipment, excluded roof or electrical work, unrealistic production, or a service model that transfers risk back to you.

Do not use a statewide “average cost” as your budget. A Connecticut quote changes with system size, roof planes, shade, structure, electrical service, equipment, storage, trenching, financing, and utility requirements. UI publishes recent RRES program-cost data specifically so buyers can compare proposals with current applications and their required customer disclosure; use it as a reasonableness check, not as a substitute for a site-specific design (UI Connecticut residential solar incentives).
The federal assumption changed for 2026
The IRS says the Section 25D home-energy credit equals 30% for qualified property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025, and is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. It also says the credit belongs to the tax year when property is installed, not merely purchased (IRS home clean-energy credit).
Therefore, a homeowner-owned system placed in service in 2026 should not be presented with a 30% Section 25D reduction in the base proposal. If you have a 2025 project, unused carryforward, mixed home/business use, or third-party ownership, ask a qualified tax professional about your facts. An installer is not your tax adviser.
How does Connecticut RRES affect installer comparisons in 2026?
RRES is part of the purchase math, not a footnote. The Residential Renewable Energy Solutions program began in 2022, replaced Connecticut’s legacy net-metering and residential incentive programs for new participants, and is administered by Eversource and United Illuminating. PURA’s 2025 annual review set updated rates for projects enrolling in 2026 (PURA RRES overview).
For eligible one-to-four-family properties served by Eversource or UI, RRES offers two structures:

UI’s current program page shows those values for both Eversource and UI and says an approved tariff rate is locked for a 20-year term. It also identifies income-qualified and economically distressed municipality adders, with eligibility rules and only one applicable adder (UI 2026 RRES rates). Eversource likewise tells 2026 Netting applicants to include the $0.0402-per-kWh on-bill charge in installer savings estimates (Eversource Connecticut solar incentives).
These facts do not mean Buy-All or Netting is universally better. The comparison depends on your interval or annual consumption, production profile, future electric loads, current retail tariff, financing, ownership, applicable adders, and tax treatment. Ask each installer for both models when both are available, with these fields visible:
- utility and customer account class;
- application year and assumed tariff term;
- annual production by year;
- expected self-consumption and export under Netting;
- the total-production Solar Energy Adjustment;
- the Buy-All production payment;
- current bill components assumed avoidable or still payable;
- the source and eligibility basis for any adder; and
- a sensitivity case with no assumed utility-rate escalation.
RRES eligibility is tied to service from a regulated electric distribution company. If you receive electricity from a Connecticut municipal utility, do not let an installer apply Eversource or UI economics to your home. Request the rules and interconnection terms for your actual provider.
Which Connecticut licenses and registrations should an installer show?
The credential must match both the legal entity and the work. A license number on a sales deck is not enough.
Connecticut DCP requires a business or individual contracting with a consumer for residential home-improvement work to hold the applicable Home Improvement Contractor registration. Verify the entity in the Connecticut eLicense lookup, including status, expiration, name, and registration type.
Solar electrical work has separate scopes:
- PV-1: limited solar electric contractor work within the state’s defined scope;
- PV-2: limited solar electric journeyperson work while employed by a licensed electrical contractor; and
- E-1 or E-2: required for connection to an existing panel, junction box, building wiring, circuit, or utility meter.
DCP’s solar-trade guidance expressly says PV-1 and PV-2 holders cannot make those existing-system or utility-meter connections (Connecticut solar license scopes).
Ask who will contract, who will pull each permit, who will supervise, and who will perform the final connection. Then match those names to the public records and contract. Do in-house crews matter when choosing a Connecticut installer?
Crew structure matters because it identifies responsibility, not because one employment model guarantees quality. A direct installer may use employees, subcontractors, or both. A sales company may contract the entire build to another company. Either structure can work when the parties, credentials, insurance, supervision, and warranty obligations are disclosed.

Who handles permits, interconnection, and approval to operate?
Your installer should own the workflow in writing, while you retain visibility into each milestone. Municipal approval and utility authorization are separate gates.
Connecticut DCP says the contract should state who obtains the building permit. If the contractor is responsible, the homeowner should confirm the permit with the local building official before work begins (Connecticut DCP permit guidance). Requirements and review timing vary by municipality, so a statewide installer should not promise one universal permit schedule.
For Eversource and UI projects, the system installer or authorized agent applies through the utility process on the customer and system owner’s behalf. UI’s current process includes application review, design review, contingent approval, municipal electrical inspection release, commissioning or required testing, meter work, and Approval to Energize (UI interconnection process). Eversource uses PowerClerk to show the current step, responsible party, fees, and project lifecycle (Eversource Connecticut interconnection).
Before signing, require answers to these five questions:
- Who submits and corrects the RRES and interconnection application?
- What condition must be met before installation begins?
- Who obtains the municipal building and electrical permits?
- Who sends the final inspection release and requests meter work?
- Who monitors the portal until written utility approval to energize or operate?
Never energize or export simply because the modules are installed. Wait for the written utility authorization required for your project.
How do you compare three Connecticut solar proposals?
Normalize the proposals in one sheet. Do not compare each salesperson’s preferred headline number.

Then perform three stress tests:
- No escalation: What happens if utility rates do not rise as forecast?
- Lower production: What happens if annual generation is 10% below the estimate?
- Service event: Who pays for diagnosis, labor, shipping, removal and reinstallation when equipment or the roof needs work?

Which solar-installer red flags should stop the sale?
Pause when a provider resists evidence that a careful buyer should reasonably request. Resolve the issue before signing or paying.
- The proposal subtracts a 30% Section 25D homeowner credit for a system expected to be placed in service in 2026.
- The savings model says “net metering” but does not identify Buy-All or Netting, the application year, and the 2026 Solar Energy Adjustment.
- The salesperson says the company is “PURA approved.” PURA says it does not approve or maintain an active-company list.
- The contract entity, installer, electrician, permit applicant, and warranty provider cannot be connected by legal name.
- A license is active but belongs to a different person or does not cover the described scope.
- The price is shown only as a payment, with no gross cash price or financed principal.
- Equipment may be substituted without your written approval.
- Roof, structural, service-panel, trenching, meter, or permit costs are simply “TBD” after a large nonrefundable payment.
- The company promises a universal installation or utility-approval date without explaining municipal and utility dependencies.
- Savings are described as certain, while production, tariff, rate escalation, degradation, downtime, and financing assumptions are hidden.
- A same-day discount or expiring program claim cannot be tied to an official deadline or written term.
DCP’s current contractor guidance warns against pressure, untraceable payments, full upfront payment, and work without a complete written contract. It also tells consumers to verify permit responsibility and active insurance (DCP hiring guidance).
How should you evaluate Teamsun as a Connecticut installer?
